President Uhuru rebukes CORD over anti-IEBC march

President Uhuru Kenyatta has lashed out at Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) for their push to evict the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from office on Monday.

Speaking at State House in Nairobi when he hosted 10,000 Ukambani leaders and professionals on Tuesday, the President expressed his support for democracy, though saying he would not support the abuse of the freedom to assemble and picket.

“I respect democracy and there is no point during my presidency that I have denied people permission to hold meetings,” he said.

“I would, however, like to categorically state that I will protect the Constitution and oppose the use of violence to fight constitutional offices like the IEBC.”

He said that CORD leaders should use the laid down process enshrined in the Constitution to push for the disbandment of IEBC instead of resorting to violence.

“It is a must for us as Kenyans to practice mature politics in accordance with the law and not violate the Constitution.”

“Let us not engage in acts that will lead to violence, destruction of property and loss of life. We are tired of such forms of politics.”

Deputy President William Ruto, in his address, expressed his delight in the possibility to traverse the country and unite Kenyans regardless of their geographic location and tribal affiliation.

He called on leaders to unite, even after the elections, and focus on building the country regardless of who wins or loses.

Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua said that their visit to State House has no links with a quest for leadership positions saying there intention as Kamba leaders is to better the lives of the electorate.

He said that, as leaders, they will join hands with Jubilee to ensure they win the next elections.

The meeting was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Joe Mucheru, Charles Keter, Jacob Kaimenyi, Eugene Wamalwa, James Macharia and Cleopa Mailu.
