Presidential debate still on despite Uhuru, Raila withdrawal

The Debates Media Limited (DBL), a company responsible for planning and conducting the 2017 Presidential Debate series, has re-assured Kenyans that the first debate scheduled for next week on Monday will go on as planned.

This comes even after President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) teams announced that their candidates will not be taking part in the much awaited debate.

However, DBL has said it is reaching out to all the political campaign teams to clarify some of the issues raised including the presidential debate guidelines and format.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jubilee Party Vice Chairman David Murathe announced that President Kenyatta will not be participating in scheduled televised debate citing lack of consultation.

Hours later following Jubilee’s announcement, the NASA campaign team also announced the pulling out of their candidate Raila Odinga.

The NASA team faulted the current proposed debate format and stipulations but left open the door to debate the President on current issues affecting Kenyans.

In a note of re-assurance, the debate organizers said that they will be issuing a comprehensive statement on some of the concerns raised by the two political outfits.

“In the meantime, we wish to assure the country that we remain committed to our pledge of delivering robust debates that will not only give the candidates an opportunity to articulate their respective visions, but also accord the citizens a chance to make informed choices on August 8th,” the statement read.

The first debate will be held at the Catholic University of East Africa.
