Presidential hopeful facing suicide charges gets nod to sue IEBC

The High Court has allowed presidential aspirant Solomon Gichira to file and initiate proceedings to compel the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to accept signatures of the people who nominated him and receive his nomination papers.

Gichira argued that IEBC acted unreasonably and in total abuse of its powers in deciding not to allow him submit his list of signatures.

High Court proceedings had declared Section 29 and the excel format requirements unconstitutional.

He further argued that IEBC decision to reject the nomination signatures goes against the principle of legitimate expectations as he was confident that he would be cleared and given the green light to present his nomination papers after the High Court invalidated IEBC requirements of 17th May 2017.

Gichira early in the week was charged in a Nairobi court with attempting to kill himself at the IEBC offices.

He is also accused of creating disturbance and destroying the IEBC property valued at Ksh 30,000.

He denied the charges before Milimani Chief Magistrate, Francis Andayi, and was released on Ksh 200,000 cash bail.
