Pressure piles on KNEC to cancel KCSE examinations

Pressure is still piling on the government through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to cancel this year’s KCSE examinations over leakage claims.

Siaya County MP Dr Christine Ombaka has maintained that this year’s KCSE exams should be cancelled, arguing that results will not be credible due to undeniable evidence of exam leakage.

The legislator, who blames KNEC for laxity in securing the exams, said the examination body owes Kenyans an explanation as to how the exam papers were leaked to the extent of being published on social media.

Dr Ombaka added that since KNEC has already admitted that there was leakage, it is left with only one option, to cancel and reset the examinations to enable free and fair competition amongst the KCSE candidates.

However, KNEC is now focused on netting candidates who might have used leaked materials or undergone prior coaching for the exam.

She also intimated that it would be unfair to proceed with the exams because of the disparity between those candidates who had access to the leaked papers and those who did not.

Dr Ombaka, who is also a member of the Education Committee in the National Assembly, warned that this is going to impact negatively on the career aspirations of the candidates due to lack of credibility.

The lawmaker who was flanked by Siaya County First Lady Rosella Rasanga and the county Maendeleo ya Wanawake organization chairperson Patricia Apoli, made the remarks at Ramula Church of Christ in Africa (CCA) in Gem Constituency.

Elsewhere in Kirinyaga County, former chairman of Private Schools Association and proprietor of Effort Schools, John Kabue Mwai, accused KNEC of having loopholes during printing and distribution of the examinations that allowed for leakage.

He added that KNEC could not dissociate itself from any anomaly associated with the exams because it was almost impossible for another party to be involved in the matter.
