Prison management wants petty offenders freed

The management of Kisii GK Prison now wants the government to release petty offenders in a bid to decongest the facility.

The deputy in charge of the prison, Benjamin Boit, said that the facility is congested and most of those being held are petty offenders.

According to Boit, the penal facility is designed to accommodate a maximum of 500 inmates but it currently has more than double that number.

He also called on the Judiciary to consider handing non-custodial sentences to petty offenders as a way of addressing the congestion.

Boit was speaking during the prisoners’ open day, an event that plays a crucial role in reforming the inmates through interaction with their loved ones, thus keeping the social ties.
