Prison officer hospitalised after brutal beating by his seniors

A prison warder is admitted in hospital in critical condition after what he claims was a thorough beating by his superiors at the Malindi GK Prison.

Peter Ndirangu, who is admitted at the Malindi Sub-county hospital, says he was beaten repeatedly with the butt of a gun and hit by a police car in attempts to kill him.

The motive of the attack is still unclear.

He sustained injuries on his head, back, legs and waist, following the Friday night attack by two of his seniors.

The prison warder claims one of the attackers had previously threatened to butcher him and surrender to the police.

“Before this attack he had told me he would chop me into pieces, and put my body in a gunny bag then surrender to the police. I reported the incident and was told investigations would be conducted,” said Ndirangu.

“Yesterday, I had just arrived at the prison from town and as I passed near where the two officers, they called me but I refused to go. One of them chased me and tripped me to the ground. Before they began attacking me. They then ran me over with the prison car while I was on the ground.”

Those he has accused of beating him have not spoken out yet, although the Coast Regional Prison Commandant James Ngaira told Citizen TV on phone that he has received reports of the allegations which are now being investigated.

Ndirangu is now hoping not just for a quick recovery but also for some progress in the probe into the alleged attack. He is not sure yet what will become of him when he has to return to work.
