Prison warder impersonating IG Boinnet arrested

A prison warder impersonating the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on social media has been arrested in Kisumu.

The man, identified as Bevil Ogeda Ouko, who is attached to Kibos Prison, went ahead to register a mobile phone number under the names Joseph K. Boinnet.

He had also opened a Facebook account under Boinnet’s name and has been issuing statements about the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) protests at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices.

The suspect is expected to be charged at the Kisumu Law Courts later Friday.

This is not the first incident where a person has been arrested pretending to be a high ranking officer in the country.

On January 4th, 2013, Joshua Waiganjo was arrested after allegedly pretending to be an Assistant Commissioner of Police for five years.

His rouse was discovered after he flew on a police helicopter to investigate the Baragoi Massacre.

Waiganjo was charged with two counts of impersonation and one count of illegally being in possession of police uniforms as well as one count of robbery with violence.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) then suspended top Rift Valley cops over the saga.

The then Rift Valley PPO John M’Mbijiwe was among those axed. The PPO had been photographed several times with Waiganjo.

However, Waiganjo’s father, Bishop Waiganjo, had maintained that his son was a genuine police officer and had been in active duty with other senior officers.
