Property destroyed after fire burns down dormitory

Property worth Sh2.4 million was reduced to ashes after a fire gutted down a dormitory at Awendo Secondary School of excellence at Awendo Sub County in Migori County.

The inferno that started at 9.45pm on Sunday destroyed the whole dormitory and all the student’s belongings.

Speaking to radio Ramogi, Awendo School deputy head teacher, Mr Kennedy Ouma, said the students were in class when the fire broke up, adding that there was no casualty reported.

He said 75 students that were housed in the dormitory lost their property in the fire incident.

Ouma added that the affected students are likely to go home for a week as they look for alternative accommodation.

He said investigation to establish the cause if the fire is underway.

Meanwhile, locals are appealing to the county government of Migori to purchase fire-fighting machines saying that some property could have been salvaged if there was a fire-fighting machine stationed at Awendo.

The fire incident comes a week after the same incident was experienced at Kokuro Secondary School where property worth Sh3.5 million was destroyed.
