Property worth millions was on Sunday reduced to ashes after a fire razed down several business shops in Voi town, Taita Taveta.

The midday inferno is reported to have originated from a hotel before spreading to adjacent shops selling clothes, mobile phones and other electronics.

The affected traders blamed the county government for the extensive damage to their property, noting that it took more than two hours for fire fighting teams to arrive at the scene.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

Efforts by the local residents to contain the fire using buckets of water did not help matters.

Other traders also lost their properties to criminals who took advantage of the situation to loot from the shops.
