Fire destroys property worth millions in Kitale

Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in a fire that broke out at Kamukunji Market in Kitale Town, Trans-Nzoia County.

The fire which brazed overnight is said to have started on Sunday night at around 11:00pm.

“It was around 11:00 PM when I and other traders in the area were closing down businesses. Suddenly I heard some shouts from the other end of the market,” a merchant at the market said.

“Before people could be alerted that a fire had broken out it had already spread to other parts of the market.”

Electronic dealers were the most affected by the inferno whose cause is yet to be established.

This is not the first time that the market has been destroyed by fire. On January 3, this year, more than 50 traders lost property estimated to be worth Ksh.50 million after a fire razed the same market.

Traders at the market have blamed accused police of failing to conduct proper investigations to ascertain the cause of the frequent fires at the market.

Residents are also calling on the government to offer reimbursement for damages incurred during the blaze.
