Pupil sustains injuries after caning by teacher

A standard seven pupil is nursing serious injuries after he was caned by his teacher for being in a romantic relationship with a standard eight girl in the same school.

David Webwe, a teacher at JoyMax Academy in Huruma Estate, Nairobi is accused of caning the boy, 12, using a wire and inflicting serious injuries on him.

Mr Patrick Maina, the boy’s father, said he had gone to the school to deliver fruits when he discovered that his son had a visible scar on the neck.

According to Mr Maina, the boy allegedly reported to the teacher that there was a standard eight girl who had written him love letters, a matter that resulted in a thorough beating.

On his part, the teacher admitted caning the pupil but defended his actions saying he had done it to instil discipline in the boy and accusing him of belonging to a group of pupils who were suspected of breaking school rules.

The father recorded the incident at Baharini Police Station and filed a P3, adding that he hopes to get justice. He also vowed to transfer his son from the school.

This incident comes barely a month after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Maitiang’i ordered swift disciplinary action against teachers at a Vihiga school who were filmed mercilessly caning students.
