The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has donated 60 million dollars towards the government’s Digital ...

Pupils in public primary schools across the country will receive tablets under the digital literacy programme by the end of the year, Public Service PS Lillian Omollo has said.

Speaking at Jaribu Primary School in Garissa town on Tuesday, Omollo said that the government has already trained 79,000 teachers for the exercise to ensure a smooth rollout.

“This is part of the Jubilee Government promise to Kenyans that all 23,951 public primary schools in the country will have received the gadget that is aimed at promoting digital literacy and information and communications technology (ICT) among the school going children,” she said.

According to Omollo, the rollout will see at least three public primary schools in each county receive the tablets for Standard one to three. All the pupils from Standard four to eight will receive the gadgets in the next phase.

Garissa Balambala, Alongo Arba, Jaribu and Garissa are the first beneficiaries in the current phase.

At the same time, the government is running an electricity project for public schools, which according to Omollo 18,000 schools have already been connected to national grid while another 5,000 in remote areas are connected to solar power.

Omollo noted this was in line with the Jubilee manifesto to create jobs for the youth in the country.

“These programmes have created jobs for our youth, the development of content for the gadgets is being developed by our youth and the future maintenance and repairs will also be done locally by our youth,” she said.

The PS said that she was impressed by the transition rates for the girl child that stands at 78 percent compared to 65 for the boys in Garissa County.

She urged parents in the area to encourage their boys because they might be left behind.

“I urge parents to give equal priority to the education of their children,” Omollo said.
