Push for Irungu Kangata amendment hots up at Senate

The senate leadership is currently holed up in a meeting with the 12-member mediation committee over the controversial third basis revenue sharing formula.

The meeting has been convened to try and strike an agreement before the Tuesday afternoon’s sitting.

According to sources privy to the meeting, the leadership is trying to prevail upon the committee to agree to the Irungu Kangata amendment that would suspend counties losing any monies for at least two financial years.

The amendment had previously flopped on the floor when Senators calling themselves Team Kenya defeated it.

However, there has been intense lobbying since then, with some senators expected to change their stand due to direct involvement of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

A tent that had been erected for an unofficial sitting had been dismantled last evening, but is currently being put up again to enable Senators discuss the issue informally before it goes to the floor of the house.
