‘Quack doctor’ Mugo wa Wairimu fined Ksh.1.4M or serve 11 years in prison

‘Quack doctor’ Mugo wa Wairimu was on Wednesday fined Ksh.1.4 million or serve 11 years in prison for running an unlicensed clinic.

Mugo was charged with, among others, unlawfully operating an unregistered pharmacy, operating a medical lab without registration and license, operating a medical clinic without a registration and license, and practicing as an unregistered and unlicensed person.

In count one, he was fined Ksh.20,000 or serve 2-years imprisonment; in count two he was fined Ksh.200,000 or serve a similar jail sentence; in count three he was fined Ksh.50,000 or a 9-month imprisonment in in default.

In the fourth count, the ‘quack doctor’ was fined Ksh.500,000 or serve 3-year sentence; in count five he was fined Ksh.150,00 or a 6-month imprisonment while in count six he was fined Ksh.500,000 or a three-year sentence. The court directed that the sentences to run consecutively.

Mugo wa Wairimu was, in a 2015 TV expose, outed as a fake doctor who would also sexually abuse his patients at the Prestige Hospital in Githurai.

A fire victim in 2018 told the court how fake Mugo operated on her only to leave her handicapped.

Cecilia Wangari, told Milimani Law Courts how she deposited a title deed and an additional Ksh.83,000 raised from a Harambee to secure discharge from Prestige Healthcare in Githurai 44, Nairobi, after she was unable to pay accumulated treatment bill amounting to Ksh.515,000.

Ms Wangari recalled how she ended up at Mugo’s facility after she was assaulted by a scorned lover and neighbours rushed her to the nearest health facility.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi further heard that Mugo operated on her but her situation never improved.

“He advised me to be going for operation until my bent fingers got straight,” she said. After a while, she doubted his professionalism and decided to visit Kenyatta National Hospital but it was too late.

Two people alleged to be the suspect’s employees were previously also arraigned in a Nairobi Court and charged with several offences of operating illegally.

The two; 22-year-old Victor Gathiru Kamunya and 19-year-old Risper Auma Ogony were later released on bail after spending two weeks in police custody.

Milimani Court Magistrate Martha Mutuku directed that the two deposit bail of Ksh.200,000 or Ksh. 500,000 bond with surety of similar amount each.
