Racist Chinese Restaurant Manager Released On Bond

Ms Zhao Yang was released on a bond of 100,000 shillings after she was charged with being in Kenya illegally and operating a restaurant without a valid license.

Ms Yang denied the charges that on the March 23rd along Galana road in Kilimani, Nairobi; she was found operating the Chinese restaurant without a license.

Yang had been remanded at Lang'ata Women Prison.

The prosecution in the case wanted Yang, whose restaurant is alleged to discriminate against Africans, denied bail saying she poses a flight risk as her residence is unknown and she still has her passport.

Her lawyer William Okallo, however, refuted prosecution claims saying she presented herself in court willingly and it would be unfair for her to be denied bail.

The Chinese restaurant named “Chongching” has been at the centre of controversy following racial discrimination claims and has been closed down for not having the proper paperwork and licences.

Violation of the Physical planning Act

Nairobi County Government had already shut down the restaurant for operating without valid licences and flouting health requirements.

The restaurant has been on the spot after reports emerged that it was barring Africans entry after 5pm.

Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero confirmed that the owners had not complied with the physical planning act by converting a residential property to a commercial premise.

Kidero added that the restaurant had no liquor license nor had they adhered to health requirements for food handling.

The governor said that the restaurant will remain closed until it complies.

Investigations into the establishment are ongoing, including that of the ombudsman.

Kidero said that all people should be treated with dignity regardless of race, adding that it was a shame that such a thing could happen, firther stating that those found culpable will be brought to book.
