Radical Muslim Cleric Makaburi Laid To Rest

The controversial cleric together with his close associate Hafadh Bahero were gunned down on Tuesday night next to the Shimo la Tewa Prison.

According to an eye witness, Mohammed Ali, the two were shot dead by a group of people suspected to have escaped to Mombasa.

Kisauni OCPD Richard Ngatia who visited the scene of the killing said the murder was under investigation and urged Mombasa residents who have information to provide them to police.

The killing of Makaburi came just a few days after a Mombasa Court awarded him Ksh. 670, 000 as compensation for violation of his rights by the police.

The cleric had moved to court to protest police raid on his house in 2011.

Makaburi was facing several terror charges in different courts in Mombasa and Nairobi.

He was also facing 3 charges of incitement in connection with the chaos that followed the murder of Sheikh Aboud Rogo last year.

Several churches were burned and police officers attacked during the three-days riots.

The UN Security Council had sanctioned the cleric as "a leading facilitator and recruiter of young Kenyan Muslims for violent militant activity in Somalia".

Last August 2012, Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed was gunned down in Mombasa.

Aboud Rogo had also been accused of recruiting and fundraising for Al-Shabaab.

His killings sparked riots in Mombasa.
