Raila, Ida Odinga leave for Winnie Mandela funeral

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and his wife Ida have left for south Africa where they will attend Winnie Mandela’s funeral.

A post on his official Twitter account shows the couple arriving at Terminal 1-A, the international departures section of the Jomo Kenytta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

Raila and Ida are expected to land in Johannesburg in time for the funeral that is scheduled for Saturday, April 14.

Winnie Mandela, renowned for her tough stance on apartheid, died last week at the age of 81 after a long illness.

Her death was met by an out-pour of emotion in Soweto as senior ANC leaders paid homage at her home.

“In life and death you remain unbreakable,” David Mabuza, South Africa’s Deputy President said at a memorial service on April 11.

“Yours was a revolution of love seeking to usher a more humane world for all the children in our land, black and white.”

Thousands of mourners gathered in the streets of Johannesburg to pay their tribute to Winnie, once known as the ‘Mother of the Nation.’
