National Super Alliance presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, on Saturday took to Twitter to condemn President Uhuru Kenyatta for increasing the national domestic debt in the last four years, terming it “Uhurunomics”.

The opposition leader was replying to an article shared on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s official Twitter handle titled, “Stop destroying Kenya’s economy for your selfish gain, President Kenyatta tells Raila.”

In the article authored by the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit, the president asked Raila to take responsibility for sabotaging the economy through chaotic demonstrations, which on Friday led to destruction and looting of private property in Kisumu, including a supermarket and a water supply system.

“I am telling Raila not to jeopardise the economy because that is what brings the taxes that fund services for Kenyans. Do not let your interest defeat the interest of 45 million Kenyans,” said the President.

In a series of tweets, Raila fired at the president blaming the Jubilee government for the ballooning domestic debt, stating that four years ago the GDP ratio was 18 percent and today is at 48 percent and it will possibly hit 60 percent next year.

“Banks are at their worst. Interest rates remain at choking levels, the only industries you [Uhuru] have grown are corruption and looting. We are in a debt cycle because of your heedless borrowing,” Raila stated.

He further challenged Uhuru to tell the country, how he plans to pay back a whopping Ksh 400 billion debt plus interest.
