Raila names 42 military, police officers in election rigging claims

The Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga has backed his rolling allegation with 42 names of security officers, who are purportedly corroborating with Jubilee government to rig the August polls.

Speaking at Capitol Hill, the former Prime Minister accused Jubilee government for infringing the 2010 Constitution, alleging that the 42 officers have been drawn from the Army, National Intelligence Service (NIS), the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Dog Unit and trained to work as returning officers, clerks and party agents.

The ball of contention is the affiliation of security officers with political factions and the use of state resources to compromise the outcome of election results.

The list bearing the names of the 42 ‘clandestine’ officers indicates that they have have been deployed across the country and recruited for different positions.

However, the Inspector General of the National Police Service rubbished NASA allegations on July 20, 2017 on JKL show, asserting that security agencies are carrying out their mandate in accordance to constitution directives and they are not affiliated to any political factions.

This is not the first time Mr. Odinga has raised alarm on security agencies playing partisans to the Jubilee government, including the acting Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
