In Summary

  • The two leaders discussed various issues among them the fight against corruption and support for the building bridges initiative.
  • The two leaders are also reported to have agreed on the need for collaborative effort to tackle underlying issues that deter the transformation of the country’s politics and economy.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday held talks with Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua who paid him a courtesy call at his Capital Hill offices in Nairobi.

The two leaders discussed various issues among them the fight against corruption and support for the building bridges initiative.

“We agreed to fight corruption and corrupt people who are rendering our mothers and children poorer. Corruption kills and destroys and has to be eliminated from our society,” said Mutua

They are also reported to have agreed on the need for collaborative effort to tackle underlying issues that deter the transformation of the country’s politics and economy.

“They further agreed to work together to foster harmony and minimize negative ethnic competition in all areas of national life,” added Odinga’s spokesperson Dennis Onyango.

On the country’s politics, the two leaders are said to have discussed about the need for electoral change to allow for inclusivity in the country’s governance.

“Ideally, we agreed that “Winner takes it all” electoral system is responsible for many problems in our country and must be changed,” said Mutua, who is preparing to run for presidency in 2022.

“I have in past and still do advocate for an expanded Executive with a directly elected Presidency, a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers… Elections have to be transformed to be about ideological and policy contests and not tribal affiliations. The future of this country will depend on how we manage our politics,” added Mutua.

Meanwhile, according to the former premier’s spokesperson, Mr. Odinga also agreed to Governor Mutua’s invite to visit Machakos on an official development tour.
