Raila opposes plans by Gov’t to import maize

ODM leader Raila Odinga has criticised plans by Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to import maize stating that the move will create room for cartels to take advantage of Kenyans.

The former Prime Minister insists that the proposal is ill-timed as it will affect Kenyans who are set to harvest their maize in the coming month.

He was addressing maize farmers at his Opoda farm during a symposium in Bondo, Siaya County on Friday.

Other leaders present during the function were Busia Woman Rep Florence Mutua who also supported the ODM leader’s sentiments.

Over recent weeks, claims by CS for Agriculture Mwangi Kiunjuri that there is need for the country to export maize due to shortage has been met with outrage.

Leaders from Western Kenya are on record demanding for his resignation over plans to import maize.

In his defence, Kiunjuri insists that the country does not have enough maize leading to increased prices.

He further claims that those against the move, alleging it is a ploy for cartels, are on a political witch-hunt.

The CS recently challenged the President to order the Cabinet to issue a statement clarifying whether the maize importation stand is a government policy.

There are fears that the price of a 2-kilogram packet of maize flour could increase to Ksh. 150 in coming weeks.

Currently, the price stands at an average of Ksh. 109 up from Ksh. 85 in January.
