Raila plans parallel Mashujaa Day celebrations

National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Tuesday revealed that the opposition will hold parallel Mashujaa Day celebrations on Friday.

The former Prime Minister said that as President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto will be leading a section of Kenyans in marking the day at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, he will be holding a separate event to mourn the “innocent young men” who were allegedly shot dead by police in Bondo and Kisumu counties during the anti-IEBC demonstrations.

“On Friday, we will mark the memory of these victims as heroes of the struggle for electoral justice at a venue to be disclosed later. On that day, we shall communicate our next course of action,” he said.

Speaking at Wilson Airport on Tuesday afternoon to announce the postponing of NASA’s Meru campaign rally after violence erupted, Odinga said that on Friday morning NASA leaders “will have a mourning session in respect to the three killed by police in Bondo, before leading a funeral service for the student killed yesterday (Monday, October 16).”

An 18-year-old Vihiga High School student was shot dead allegedly by anti-riot police in Kondele, Kisumu while on his way to a nearby shop to buy ice cream.

On Wednesday, NASA, who suspended their countrywide demos until further notice, will conduct a rally at Nairobi’s Kamukunji Grounds, while on Thursday, the opposition will be in Turkana county.
