Raila steps in to end Luo council of elders wrangles

Members of the Luo council of elders on Monday resolved to bury their differences and work together, following a private meeting with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Mr. Odinga, who is also the patron of the Luo Council of elders, said the warring factions had unanimously agreed to join hands in uniting the community under the chairmanship of Mzee Willis Opiyo Otondi.

“In the recent past there have been some wrangles within the council… There have been factions tending to tear apart the council but  today this meeting has brought the leadership together,” said Odinga.

The meeting took place at Mr. Odinga’s Opoda farm home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Mr. Odinga said they resolved to review and strengthen the role of the institution of the council of elders.

The opposition leader added that the Luo council of elders would engage in consultations and discussions with elders from other communities in the country to enhance cohesion.

“The council of elders is a very important institution that deals with issues of culture that help the society remain together. As we move forward, the Luo council will be very active in cultural issues and they will also engage in consultations with elders of other communities across the country,” the former prime minister said.

On his part, the Chairman of the Luo Council of Elders, Mzee Otondi hailed Mr. Odinga for stepping in to end the wrangles that had threatened to tear the group apart.

The meeting, which also saw Mzee Adera Osawa elected as the Secretary General and former Secretary General Mzee Owino Nyadi elected as the Executive Director of the Luo Council of Elders, was also attended by Siaya Senator James Orengo whose major role will be to handle legal matters for the group.
