Raila to launch Peoples Assembly

Opposition chief Raila Odinga is set to lead the inaugural launch of the People’s Assemblies in the coastal region on Sunday as the National Super Alliance (NASA) continues with its push for electoral reforms in the country.

The launch is set to be held at the Sun and Sand Hotel in Kilifi County, and is expected to begin at 2pm with various NASA leaders expected to be present at the meeting.

Leaders from the five counties that make up the coastal region – Mombasa, Tana River, Kwale, Taita-Taveta and Kilifi – are expected to congregate at the five-star hotel, led by NASA allied Governors among them Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa and her Likoni counterpart, Mishi Mboko have already arrived at the venue of the launch with several MCAs from coastal region county assemblies also in attendance.

It is believed the launch could see a national inaugural date set for close to 14 counties that passed a motion to approve the People’s Assembly motion.

The national inaugural date is set to precede the proposed ‘swearing in’ of the opposition chief, which had initially been scheduled for December 12 but was postponed with a new date yet to be announced.

On Saturday, December 17, Odinga held a meeting with various leaders from Mombasa county to address, among other issues, the growing discontent among Coast leaders claiming the region was sidelined by the opposition in the parliamentary nominations.
