Opposition leader Raila Odinga has assured his supporters that he meant well and had their interests at heart when he declared his support for the 8% Value Added Tax (V.A.T) on petroleum products.

Speaking on Monday in Kisumu, Mr. Odinga said President Uhuru Kenyatta was in a fix and could not yield to pressure from Kenyans to scrap the fuel taxation.

“I have been at the forefront in advocating for the rights of Kenyans, and so I would not agree to something I know would burden the people,” said the former premier.

“For many years I spoke to these people (Jubilee government) but they refused to listen… they said I was lying and told me to go back to the village and dig. I told them that if they took too many loans without proper investments then it would come back to burden them.”

He further added that he only agreed to support the V.A.T with his own set of conditions as the opposition leader.

“We decided to support the VAT on the condition that such budgets as for leaders going to watch football in Russia, traveling First/Business Class and going for bench marking and bonding trips in Arusha must be cut down,” said the ODM Party leader, who was speaking at event organised by Unaitas Sacco.

“Leaders who get into the government without much and one day later are already fatter must also be done away with.”

Mr. Odinga, who was accompanied by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili, also stressed on the need to save and invest, saying its the best way to transform our economy and nation.
