Raila: Trump must withdraw racist remarks
Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Saturday demanded that US President Donald Trump must withdraw his racial remarks in which the American leader referred to African nations and Haiti as “shithole countries”
The National Super Alliance (NASA) chief in a statement sent to newsrooms, described the racial slur made by Trump as troubling and unfortunate. He demanded that Trump must “unequivocally” apologize for his actions.
“The remarks made by President Trump are part of a growing habit by a president who has never missed an opportunity to bully and disparage particularly poor nations,” the statement reads in part.
According to Mr. Odinga, the remarks are deeply hypocritical as they conveniently ignore the fact that US corporations have pitched tent in the same African countries that Trump has insulted and are making billions of dollars which they send back to their country.
“Recent media reports indicate that President Trump views Africa as a market for US goods and services and is keen to slow down on issues of democracy and human rights in pursuit of trade in Africa. Africa cannot be a market and a nothing at the same time,” the statement reads.
“Mr. Trump must equally be reminded that many of the poverty and governance related problems that keep Africa down result directly or indirectly from US foreign policies and interference,” the statement reads.
He appealed to other African leaders to stand up for Africa’s dignity and follow suit by demanding an apology from Trump.
