Raila: War on corruption just getting started

By Chrisphine Otieno

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has told his critics to prepare for an intensified fight against corruption which he says, is just getting started.

Speaking in Nyansiongo, Nyamira County during the burial of George Ndemo, son to area governor John Nyagarama, the former Prime Minister said the purge on graft is not targeting any community but individuals.

Mfisadi ni mwizi na haibi kwa niaba kwa niaba ya jamii yake ila kwa niaba yake pekee yake. Huyo mtu ni adui yako, yangu na kila mkenya,” he said. (A corrupt person does not steal on behalf of his community but for his own self. That is your enemy and an enemy of every Kenyan.)

Hii vita mpaka wakenya waungane pamoja, msiseme, inalemga Wakisii, Wajaluo au Wakikuyu. wewe ngoja tu, ndio inaanza.” (In this fight, all Kenyans must unite and not say it is targeting the Kisii, Luo or Kikuyu tribes. But just wait, it is just getting started.)

Odinga remarked that his past efforts to raise a red flag over the vice at major public institutions had been dismissed by his detractors only to be vindicated later.

He announced a major three-day National Conference on Corruption in August where the government and the general public will meet and figure out how to fight graft from the bottom up not vice versa.

Baada ya hiyo tutaingia mambo ya ugatuzi, uchaguzi ili tuweze kuboresha mambo ya utawala kwa taifa letu, (After corruption, we shall discuss issues of devolution and elections so that we can improve governance in Kenya),” added Mr. Odinga.

The ODM boss said his handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta has been lauded worldwide giving examples of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US President Barack Obama as well as South Africa’s new leader Cyril Ramaphosa who have all backed the move.

Siaya Senator James Orengo and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed said the ‘’handshake’’ had earned Kenya recognition and praise in the international community.

The duo castigated Senator Kipchumba Murkomen’s attacks on Mr. Odinga over the ongoing Mau forest evictions saying they were in bad taste.
