Raila’s return, Zimbabwe coup among top 10 Google searches
The ‘Zimbabwe Coup’ was the most searched topic in Kenya last week, according to a Google report for the week of 11th – 19th November 2017.
This follows the recent political developments in Zimbabwe, which saw the country’s military put President Robert Mugabe under house arrest and his wife reportedly fleeing the country.
English Premier League matches Arsenal vs Tottenham, Manchester United vs Newcastle, Chelsea vs West Brom, Man City Vs Leicester, Crystal Palace vs Everton were the second most searched topic.
Third among the top ten list was ‘Raila Odinga return’. The opposition leader returned to the country on Friday (November 17) after a 10-day trip to the United States and United Kingdom.
Football featured prominently on the list with La Liga being the fourth most searched topic.Matches; Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid, Leganes vs Barcelona and Roma vs Lazio topped this category of the giant search engine.
The Jumia Black Friday was the fifth trending search of the week. This is gaining popularity as the theme of Black Friday gets grounded in Kenya.
Following reports that Kenyatta University students had set ablaze one of the university’s buildings during their demonstrations, most Kenyans went online to search for more information with ‘Kenyatta University on fire’ becoming the sixth trending search. The university was later closed down indefinitely with the Vice Chancellor announcing that the decision had been prompted by the ongoing lecturers’ strike.
The late Dr. Wahome Gakuru’s burial ceremony was the seventh trending item on Google Search in the week that started on 11th November to 19th November. The late Governor Gakuru passed on in a grisly road accident on the morning of Tuesday, November 7, 2017. He was laid to rest on Saturday, November 18th.
As teams prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, pre-World Cup friendlies pitting Nigeria against Argentina and England vs Brazil came in eighth on the list.
Tanzanian actress Elizabeth Michael (Lulu) was the ninth trending search. Earlier in the week, a Dar es Salaam High Court found the actress guilty of causing the death of Bongo movie star, Steven Kanumba.
Closing the list of top 10 weekly trending searches was Bitcoin, as Kenyans sought to find out more about the cryptocurrency and global digital payment system. Earlier in the week, a groom in Naivasha, Anthony Mburu paid his dowry using Bitcoin.
