Railway construction trucks impounded for overloading
Several trucks which ferry sand and construction material used for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) were on Sunday impounded by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) for overloading.
Six drivers of the impounded trucks fled and left the trucks behind, parked at Caltex near Voi town after learning that they were being trailed by KeNHA officers.
KeNHA spokesperson says that the drivers refused to take the trucks for weighing in order to establish whether they were overloaded or not under the set rules and regulations.
The spokesperson added that they will not allow overloading of trucks along the Mombasa – Nairobi highway for they were destroying the tarmac roads by exceeding the set limits.
The trucks are under tight security as officers from Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Police and those from KeNHA stand guard.
