Railway materials worth Ksh.2M recovered in Solai

Police have recovered rail materials worth Ksh.2million following a botched robbery attempt at the Solai Railway line in Nakuru County.

In a statement, Kenya Railways MD Philip Mainga said officers found a Mitsubishi lorry with registration no. KAA 237Q and a motorcycle which had no plates.

“The police made a recovery of 400 full rail bars and 13 sleepers worth Ksh.2 million. The vehicle has since been towed to Rongai Police Station and investigations towards the matter has begun,” he said.

The suspects are said to have fled the scene left the materials behind after members of the public alerted the police who immediately rushed to the scene.

Nakuru Railways OCPD Said Shungi warned that anyone found vandalising or trespassing the railway reserve will be prosecuted.

He also requested that anyone with more information regarding the incident to report to the police.

The Kenya Railways MD added that the corporation has heightened deployed more officers on the rail corridor following instances of vandalism.

He noted that the corporation also held a consultative workshop with security agents from Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western regions early this week to ensure increased enhanced surveillance on the Metre Gauge Railway corridor and to discourage thieves from accessing the corridors.

“Vandalizing the railway line compromises the safety of the operations. The Corporation is committed to ensuring the safety of the operations and all its assets. Any person found vandalizing railway property is guilty of a felony and liable to prosecution,” Mr. Mainga said.
