MCAs call for more Govt support to help children with Autism

Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from over 20 counties are meeting in Naivasha to discuss ways of improving access to education and better health care for children living with autism in the country.

Speaking at the event on Friday, the County legislators called on the Kenya Institute of Special Education to pull up their socks when it comes to execution of their mandate.

Nairobi Nominated MCA June Ndegwa emphasized that following the recently signed partnership with Autism Lights, they will go round the country raising awareness and sponsoring training of caregivers and therapists for autistic children.

“It is time we stopped politicking and work for the people of this country. There is a lot of work to be done in this country and we are focusing on the wrong thing,” said Ms. Ndegwa, whose sentiments were echoed by Garissa Nominated MCA Hussein Dagane.

Mr. Chege Wamaratu, the Director of Public Policies and Special Projects Africa, Autism Lights said it’s high time the government allocated more funds towards quality health care and education for autistic children.

“We are urging the government to work on a curriculum for these kids. The facilities should have a healthy environment for them,” said Wamaratu.

He also urged everyone to take responsibility towards ensuring zero stigma is associated with autism.

Autism is the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 1 in 40 individuals in both the pediatric and adult population globally and in Kenya.

The prevalence of Autism is higher than pediatric HIV, diabetes and cancer combined and is currently a public health crisis.

Access to education has been cited as one of the most pressing needs for children who are diagnosed with Autism.
