RAMTU: Genesis of Governor Johos troubles

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho seems to have broken the proverbial mirror giving him seven years bad luck!

Joho, who is a quite a vocal critic of the Jubilee government, has faced several accusations and predicaments.

Through innuendo, the Mombasa County leader has been accused of drug trafficking, his bodyguards and firearms withdrawn, and most recently his secondary school certificate branded fake.

The genesis of his problems started last year in January after a container freight station linked to him was seized with Sh56m contraband sugar.

And as the Kenya Police and Kenya Revenue Authority probed the matter, Joho was ordered to surrender his firearms.

It was then the Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery made the announcement, saying, “The warning has been issued to him and what he is doing is crossing the red line. You return the gun by this time or face the law. You cannot challenge the government regardless of who you are, and more so, when General Nkaissery is in charge of security.”

Shortly after, as if to add insult to injury, the government withdrew his bodyguards as well as those of Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, in what the State termed as normal reshuffling of security personnel.

In addition, the embattled governor has also been at loggerheads with the Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa .

Joho said: “To me, Marwa is a very small person. Not even Marwa, but the person who hired Marwa to me is a very small person.”

Angrily, President Kenyatta responded about two weeks ago while launching the Mtongwe Ferry Services in Mombasa, an event Governor Joho was barred from attending by security services.

“They think they have the authority to challenge me. He should not play with me, I will show him. And why is he following me around, I am not his wife,” said President Kenyatta.

Several weeks later the deputy ODM leader bank accounts were frozen for 10 days and a few days later, the Kenya National Examination Council questioned the authenticity of his KCSE result slip forcing the governor to declare he scored a D- in the national examination.

Is this a battle worth fighting?
