Rangala Girls High School dormitory goes up in flames

A dormitory at St. Francis Rang’ala Girls High School in Siaya County on Sunday went up in flames destroying property worth millions of shillings.

Ugunja Sub-county Director of Education Obed Justus Guto said property belonging to about 80 students was destroyed in the fire which began at around 6:30pm.

“At around 6:30pm, smoke was seen from one of the dormitories as some students were checking in from half term and others were taking supper. The staff and students fought the fire but the property of about 80 students had been lost, said Mr. Guto.

“We want to tell parents that the girls are safe, we have had a meeting and we have agreed to settle the girls.”

Confirming the incident, Ugunja sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Juma said there were no human casualties in the incident.

“As at now we’re treating that part of the block as a scene of crime and we want to begin our investigations immediately so that we establish the real cause of the fire,” he added.
