‘Rapist’ teacher to stay in custody as case continues

A Milimani High Court before Justice Ngenye Macharia has permanently cancelled bond and bail terms initially awarded to the Highridge High School teacher who allegedly defiled a minor.

Mr. Hillary Okeyo was denied bail after the prosecution successfully petitioned the court to do so citing possibilities of witness interference and intimidation.

The Magistrate said she had a compelling reason to have the teacher conduct his trial while in custody given that if released he will go back to the school where the offence was committed as he is still a staff there; hence he stands a chance of interfering with key witnesses who are mainly students and teachers.

Hillary Okeyo, who allegedly defiled a 15 year old form one student, had been released on a cash bail of Ksh 500,000 with a surety of a similar amount or a bond of Ksh 2 million.

While appearing before Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo early October, Okeyo was ordered to neither interfere with the witness nor try to get in touch with her mother, who is the complainant in the case.

On the night of October 7th, ‘rapist’ Okeyo is alleged to have defiled the 15-year-old after he summoned her to the staff room.

According to his victim, the teacher pounced on her and committed the atrocious act once she got into the staff room.

It is reported that the head teacher, who took the girl to the hospital hours after the incident occurred, hid this situation from the parent of the student.

When he appeared in court, Okeyo denied the charges. Should be convicted, the Biology teacher stands to face life imprisonment.
