Rasanga wants schools to conduct fire drills

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga now says that schools should conduct fire drills to prepare their students on ways of escaping from danger during fire outbreaks.

The Governor argues that it is important for the schools’ administration to realize that there can be a fire outbreak any time, hence the need for the drills to train students on safety precautions to avert possible loss of lives or injuries during such eventualities.

Rasanga, who made the remarks following a spate of fire outbreaks in schools in Siaya County, added that this will help the students to know proper evacuation routes and proper measures to take in the event of not only a fire outbreak but also of a gas or chemical leak.

He was speaking after visiting students whose belongings were burnt in a dormitory fire at Nyang’oma Boys High School in Bondo Sub County where he maintained that infrastructural development for schools should be devolved to the counties.

The Governor reiterated that all the education function needs to be devolved apart from the teachers’ remuneration which he says should remain with the national government.
