Rats invade Meru village, destroy property

Residents of Gachuuri village in Meru County on Tuesday, August 30 woke up to a shocking spectacle after thousands of rats invaded their households destroying clothes and food stuff.

According to a resident, Ian Mwiathi, the rodents flocked almost every house within the village and attempts to eliminate them proved challenging.

“We have tried using all types of traps and poison to eliminate them but they are increasing in numbers every day,” Mwiathi said.

The residents say that the rodents came from a nearby bush and are bigger than usual.

“It is very difficult to eliminate the rats as they flee to the bush after destroying our possession,” a resident told Muuga FM. “Some are as big as cats.”

“The rats turned to eating chicks; it has even become difficult to keep chicken in the house.”

The residents say that they are opting to demolish some houses in attempts to eliminate the rodents.

They have now called on the county government to move in with speed and help them address the menace.

The local administration could be reached for a comment as their calls went unanswered.
