Raul Castro re-elected as first secretary of Cubas Communist Party
Cuba’s Communist Party re-elected Raul Castro as its first secretary at the final plenary session of the Party’s seventh congress.
Nearly 1,000 delegates including Castro’s elder brother, the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, attended the meeting of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).
The younger Castro has served as first secretary of the PCC since he replaced his elder brother Fidel at the last congress in 2011.
The PCC Central Committee also ratified Dr. Jose Ramon Machado Ventura in his position as the second secretary of the PCC.
The 7th PCC Congress, which ran from Saturday to Tuesday, gathered 1,000 delegates and 280 guests to discuss and set Cuba’s economic and political path for the next five years.
It also marked the first congress since Havana and Washington re-established diplomatic relations in 2015.
On Monday, the PCC approved a draft of the National Plan for Economic and Social Development, which will be the guiding document of the Cuban economic system until 2030.
