Red Cross asks for Ksh.820M as Kenyans online demand accountability

The Kenya Red Cross Society is urgently appealing for support from Kenyans, partners and stakeholders to tackle the ongoing drought crisis in Kenya.

The appeal seeks to raise Ksh.825 million for interventions to support more than 300,000 households.

According to Red Cross, the drought has affected 1 million Kenyans in 17 counties which include: Turkana, Baringo, Tana River, West Pokot, Samburu, Isiolo, Lamu, Kitui, Kilifi, Garissa, Wajir, Embu, Laikipia, Mandera, Marsabit, Nyeri and Tharaka Nithi.

Interventions will include cash transfers, health and nutrition, food distribution, livelihood support, water sanitation and hygiene.

At the same time, Kenyans online have been blasting Red Cross for asking for money to help the needy claiming that they never account with the monies they have crowdfunded in the past.

Two hashtags, #KenyansForKenya #RedCrossTumechoka are trending and Kenyans on Twitter are expressing anger and demanding accountability with many saying they “are not boarding.”

The government has issued several statements saying there should be no cause for alarm as ‘no Kenyans have died from hunger’ and at the same time approved the immediate release of Ksh.2 billion to facilitate drought intervention.

A report by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) cites below average 2018 short rains for the rising cases of food insecurity.

Livestock and crop production in several parts of the country has also been affected by the ongoing drought as most water sources have dried up.

The 2019 March to May long rains are expected to delay and may be poorly distributed.

The National Drought Management Authority has added that the expected poor rainfall performance will result in less than full recovery for many of these counties.

This means that food insecurity is likely to persist through to July 2019.
