Red Cross launches walk to help Muranga landslide victims
The Kenya Red Cross has launched a walk to raise funds that will assist over 4,000 people who have been affected by landslides and floods in Murang’a County.
The walk aims to raise about Ksh.4 million that will be used to collect food and other items for the victims.
Speaking at Ihura Stadium in Murang’a where the initiative was flagged off, the youth and volunteers officer at Kenya Red Cross; Shadrack Musyoka, acknowledged that this was the first time the region was adversely affected by the landslides.
He also urged area residents to donate towards the initiative in order to assist the affected families.
According to reports, an estimated 1193 houses have been affected by weak fault lines in the region resulting in landslides that have also destroyed tea and coffee farms, leaving many households without any source of income and learning institutions have not been spared either.
Reports on the landslides are currently being compiled according to James Kimani, the regions’ geologist.
