Red Cross resumes operations in Baringo

Following the suspension of relief food operations on February 25 by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) as a result of insecurity in Baringo county, the organization on Tuesday, February 28 has resumed operations.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary General, Abbas Gullet, said the operations resumed Tuesday after having agreed with county leaders, clergy, and council of elders at Kenya School of Government in Kabarnet.

Dr Gullet has asked for an assurance that his team stays secured as they conduct their operations, urging that the conflict between Pokot and Tugen be settled as soon as possible through peace talks and substitute means of livelihoods to avoid deaths.

During the meeting held in a bid to ensure security measures are enforced to the humanitarian agency personnel, Polio Immunization Ambassador, Senator Harold Kipchumba, said that the county suffered a heavy blow when the organization stopped its operations.

The decision to suspend operations was reached at after hundreds of residents of Marigat were reported to have barricaded Marigat-Loruk road intending to deny passage to a convoy of six KRCS trucks ferrying food transit to Lomelo in Turkana.
