Red flag raised as Lake Naivasha water levels drop

Environmentalists have raised concerns over the receding water levels in Lake Naivasha following the prolonged dry spell which has led some herders flooding the shores of  the lake in search of pasture.

Lake Naivasha Water Resources User’s Association (WRUA) Chairman, Enock Kiminta, says the situation is getting out of hand since people are abstracting water from River Malewa, which flows into Lake Naivasha, illegally.

Kiminta added that small scale farmers are using the water for irrigating their farms and this has caused significant drop in water levels in the lake.

The residents are now calling on the relevant authorities to intervene and save them from possible conflicts that arise due to differences in the water usage.
