Register illegal guns, DP Ruto urges

Deputy President William Ruto has told people owning illegal guns in the conflict prone north rift region to register them with the government.

The deputy president, who was in the company of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, on Wednesday launched an exercise at Kabel in Baringo County to register illegal guns.

Ruto assured residents that the government is committed to restoring peace in the region, noting that the recruitment and vetting of youths to join the national police reservists (NPR) in the area will take place in August.

Baringo County has in the past experienced a series of insecurity cases due to the use of illegal firearms during cattle rustling as well as in retaliatory attacks, leading to the loss of innocent lives.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary, who assured residents that their guns would not be confiscated if they follow the right procedure, also asked the residents to shun illicit alcohol.

The team had earlier toured Katilia in Turkana County, Kagir in Baringo North, Nosukro in Tiaty and Kabel in Baringo South before heading to Eminiing in Mogotio Sub-County.

The DP was accompanied by Rift Valley regional coordinator Osman Warfa and several MPs from the north rift region.
