Register now to avoid last minute rush, new voters told

As the voter listing exercise enters its third week this morning, residents of Siaya County have been urged to turn out in large numbers and register as voters to avoid the last minute rush.

Former Gender Permanent Secretary Prof Jacqueline Oduol said that people should seize the opportunity that they have within the remaining two weeks to register as voters instead of waiting until the last minute.

She expressed fears that the last minute rush would lock out some potential voters because there would be a lot of jam at the registration centres, hence the need for them to register now when there is adequate time.

Prof Oduol, who hailed the locals who had already registered for their determination in verifying their enlisting details, regretted the slow pace at which new people were registering as voters.

The former PS who was speaking in Siaya Town also impressed upon those who had applied for national identity cards to check for them at their respective chief’s offices so at to register as voters.

She took the opportunity to call upon the local leaders and well wishers to come out and assist those with mobility issues by transporting them to the registration centres.

Prof Oduol stated that they could, for instance, hire motorbikes to carry persons with disability, the sick and the elderly to the registration centres to ensure no potential voter is left out of the on-going registration exercise.
