Relief food dispatched to Nyando flood victims
The government has dispatched food stuff to Nyando, Kisumu to help save a humanitarian crisis after thousands were displaced by heavy rain and resulting floods.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kisumu County Deputy Commissioner James Aluodo said his office had already received 1000 bags of rice and 500 bags of maize.
“The national government is doing all it can to help the people of Nyando affected by floods, now we have food and nets that we intend to give about 20,000 families,” said Aluodo.
The county official added that over 4,000 households had been affected by the floods so far, saying; “…that is a big number, although it fluctuates, what affects us most are the rains in Kericho and Nandi hills.”
Areas affected most include Magina and Kakola Ombaka, in which locals have been urged to move to safer grounds.
“There is need for a lasting solution to this, we cannot always plan for help… we have the case of dykes in Budalang’i that should also be brought to Nyando,” Aluodo added.
