Relief for Mangiti, 23 co-accused after NYS case thrown out

Former Devolution PS Peter Mangiti and 23 others charged over the 47.6 million NYS scandal were on Friday March 9, acquitted due to lack of evidence.

This was after Mangiti moved to the High Court seeking to stop his prosecution on grounds that the institution of the criminal proceedings was an illegality and abuse of power.

In his argument, the former Devolution PS indicated that his role in the procurement process was limited to appointing of the Ministerial Tendering Committee and signing of the contract of the award of the tender, urging the court to block his prosecution over the NYS scandal.

The accused persons were facing charges of corruption, abuse of office and failure to comply with procurement laws.

According to prosecution, the NYS money was siphoned through fraudulent payments to firms whose registration details were questionable.

Mangiti has been out on a 3 million shillings cash bail.
