Relief for Nairobi residents as Ndakaini Dam nears full capacity

Nairobi residents, who have been grappling with water rationing, can now heave a sigh of relief after the County Government announced improved water supply.

Governor Mike Sonko said Ndakaini Dam, one of Nairobi’s main water supply towers is almost filled to capacity following the heavy rains witnessed in most parts of the country in the recent past.

“Today, I am happy to report that we have toured Ndakaini Dam in Murang’a and it’s almost filled to capacity, at 90 percent. This is good news to the people of Nairobi who have had to bear with rationing when water levels at the dam were low,” said Sonko in a statement.

With the improved water supply, estates along Juja Road, Mathare, Mlango Kubwa, Huruma, among others, that have been receiving water four days a week will henceforth receive water everyday.

Survey of Kenya, Mathare North, TRM, Safari Park and Zimmerman estates that have been receiving water on Mondays only are now set to receive water for three days a week – Saturday to Monday.

Thindigua and Runda estates that have been receiving water on Monday and Tuesday are set to now receive water every day while the Central Business District that used to get water from Monday to Thursday should expect to receive water on a daily basis.

Lucky Summer and Dandora residents should expect to receive water on Monday as well, in addition to its usual supply of Tuesday to Thursday while Kayole, Komarock and Harambee estates will also benefit from additional 12 hours of water supply.

“All other areas will receive improved pressures,” said Sonko.

The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has also confirmed that water supply will henceforth improve and residents can get details of the improved water supply program from the NWSC website.

“We shall revert to the pervious rationing programme in the future when the water levels drop, but for now, let us all enjoy the improved supply while it lasts,” said the Governor.
