Religion should not be used to propagate terrorism Pope Francis

Pope Francis has hit out at terrorist organisations and extremist groups for using religion to perpetrate violence.

Speaking in a meeting with inter-religious and ecumenical representatives at the Apostolic Nunciature in Nairobi on Thursday morning, Pope Francis said religion should not be used to commit terrorist activities saying there is need to respect humanity and embrace people’s right to live in freedom.

While making references to the Westgate and Garissa University College attacks, the Pope said God’s name should not be used to perpetrate violence while praying that God grants the affected families peace.

The Pope further called for cooperation and understanding among religious leaders to ensure effective service delivery.

“Religion plays an important role in forming conscious service and uphold statutory values and raising citizens who will infuse integrity in civil society,” he said.

He said youth have been a target for recruitment into extremist groups saying religious leaders should invite everyone to live in peace, harmony and mutual respect.

Pope Francis said the world expects leaders to work together to fight problems affecting humanity saying it is his prayer that men and women will see each other as brothers and sisters.

Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) chair Abdul Gafur hailed the churches’ commitment to promote peace and support the country’s education sector.

He highlighted the role of SUPKEM in promoting peace and co-existence saying the body has been working with the government of Kenya and partners to offer humanitarian services.

“Religious leaders have a duty to promote love, faithfulness and say no to impunity, injustice, greed and malice.” he said.

“Our world is characterised with reckless war, self-centeredness and blackmail. Today we are caught in politics without principals, enjoyment without conscious, religion without spirituality and people are preoccupied with making money at the expense of others, we cannot continue in this direction.”

Gafur said SUPKEM had joined hands with other religions in Kenya to establish environmental body that will foster peace through environmental awareness.
