Rename Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, lobby group demands

A lobby group is demanding that Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa be renamed.

The Okoa Mombasa Coalition presented a petition to the Mombasa County Assembly on Friday citing lack of public participation.

“We want structures to get a name that reflects the historical and cultural heritage of Mombasa,” a statement from the group reads.

This comes three weeks after the revamped park was reopened by President Uhuru Kenyatta in readiness for the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The Mama Ngina Waterfront Park is said to have been redeveloped at a cost of Ksh. 460million.

Okoa Mombasa Coalition is proposing that the park be named after Mekatilili, one of Kenya’s first freedom fighters.

One notable member of the lobby group is former chair of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission Yash Pal Ghai.

According to him and his counterparts, renaming the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park to Mekatilili would enable Mombasa to honor one of the country’s unsung heroes.

“Mombasa would also be exercising local participation for local resources,” the statement from the coalition reads.

On Friday, the petition was presented to the Mombasa County Assembly Clerk Salim Juma who assured them that the document would be on the Speaker’s desk on Monday.

He said be taken through due process at the County Assembly.
