Residential houses at Nyayo Highrise to be demolished: NEMA

The owners of residential houses built at Nyayo Highrise in Nairobi have been given 14 days to demolish the buildings.

A letter to Ederman Properties seen by Citizen Digital indicates that the buildings have encroached on the Nairobi Dam.

The notice from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) follows an inspection carried out on Friday October 12.

It concluded that the said houses at Nyayo Highrise on Mbagathi Way are sitting on riparian land and should be demolished within the stipulated time.

A separate notice by WARMA states that the removal of the Nyayo Highrise houses is part of efforts to restore the riparian reserve to its original state within 90 days.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, a NEMA official who sought anonymity verified the authenticity of the notice.

Edermann Properties have also been directed to present themselves at the NEMA office headquarters with a legal advisor.

This comes barely two months after several other buildings in Nairobi were demolished for being illegally built on public land.

They include Taj Mall, South End Mall, Nakumatt Ukay, a section of Oshwal Centre, Java House and Shell Petrol Station in Kileleshwa among others.
