Residents destroy 2000 bottles of illicit brew in Muranga

Murang’a County residents Thursday evening set ablaze over 2000 bottles of second generation alcohol that were nabbed at a Kambirwa depot.

Irate residents said that they destroyed the alcohol because illicit brew and second generation alcohol had rendered the youth in Murang’a useless.

Led by area Women’s Representative Sabina Wanjiru Chege, locals claimed that they were following a presidential directive in destroying the illicit brew.

Wanjiru declared that the raid on bars serving illicit brew is on, adding that the residents would fight to reclaim the youth of the Mount Kenya region.

She accused manufacturers, bar owners and suppliers of greed saying that their only concern is making profit-even if it at the expense of fellow human beings.

Murang’a County Commissioner Kula Hache and two police bosses stopped the public from destroying the seized alcohol because they were transferring it to the police station as evidence.

The move infuriated the public and the Wanjiru engaged the police in a heated exchange of words before the lorry ferrying the drinks sped off heading to Murang’a town with the security team in tow.

The residents marched more than 10 kilometers to Murang’a town, where they went to the County Commissioner’s office to demand that she destroy the recovered illicit drinks in their presence.

The locals said that the county commissioner has been a hindrance to the war against alcoholism calling for her sacking.

She finally bowed to public pressure, and the police lorry was taken to General Ihura stadium where the liquor was offloaded by the youth and destroyed.

Wanjiru questioned why the commissioner did not want the alcohol destroyed and urged the police and administrators to immediately destroy illicit brew instead of storing it at the police station.

She further warned the police against inaction stating that public will take the law into their hands should they fail to apprehend offenders.
